EDITORS COMMENTS
In the aftermath of the devastating First World War, a heartfelt gesture of gratitude and devotion was made to Exeter Cathedral in the form of seven anonymously donated statues. These figures, representing the patron saints of the Allied powers, were the creation of local Exeter sculptor, Herbert Read. The statues were hoisted into position in the empty niches surrounding and above the north porch of the cathedral in October 1920. The image captures the moment as scaffolding supports the statues, with the figure of St. George, the patron saint of England, taking center stage. Trampling the dragon underfoot, St. George embodies the triumph and victory over adversity that the people of Exeter and the Allies sought in the aftermath of the war. The statues served as a symbol of hope and thanksgiving, reminding the community of the enduring power of faith and the strength of unity in the face of great hardship. This poignant moment in Exeter's history is a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Exeter and the Allies, as they worked to rebuild and restore their city and their lives after the Great War.
