EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Polpo dell'Argonauta, Seppia tubercolata, Calamaro sagittato" or "The Argonaut Squid, Cuttlefish, and European Flying Squid," is an exquisite illustration from Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by V. Stanghi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) is celebrated as one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. This illustration showcases three fascinating marine creatures: the Great Argonaut, or Argonauta argo (1), a large, elusive squid with a unique ability to produce a protective shell; the Cuttlefish, or Sepia tuberculata (2), a highly intelligent and versatile cephalopod known for its ability to change color and texture; and the European Flying Squid, or Todarodes sagittatus (3), a species of squid that can leap out of the water and glide through the air. This intricately detailed engraving not only captures the beauty and complexity of these marine creatures but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the time. The accompanying labels, written in both Italian and Latin, identify each species, further emphasizing the scientific importance of the work. The botanical illustration not only serves as a testament to Turpin's artistic prowess but also as a valuable record of the natural world during the 19th century.
