EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a collection of five flycatcher species native to the eastern United States, beautifully illustrated by John James Audubon and published in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890. The Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus) is shown in the center, with its distinctive crest and robust build. To its left, the Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe) perches on a branch, its white belly contrasting with its dark back and wings. The Eastern Wood-Pewee (Contopus virens) is depicted on the right, its olive-gray back and wings blending seamlessly with the foliage. In the bottom left corner, the Acadian Flycatcher (Empidonax virescens) sits on a mossy branch, its olive-green back and wings contrasting with its white underparts. The Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Acadian Flycatcher are all members of the Tyrant Flycatcher family, known for their agile hunting skills and distinctive crests or lack thereof. These birds were widely distributed across the eastern United States during the late 19th century, and their inclusion in this ornithological report underscores their importance to naturalists and bird enthusiasts of the time. This chromolithograph, produced by E.K. Mayers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time. The vibrant colors and intricate textures bring these birds to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and unique characteristics over a century later.
