Great Yarmouth: A Traditional Herring Harvest of 1905 This evocative photograph captures the bustling scene of the Great Yarmouth herring harvest in 1905. The quay is filled with an impressive fleet of around 650 to 700 Scotch boats, which had traveled from Aberdeen and other northern ports to assist in the gathering of this valuable marine resource. The men aboard these vessels were joined by their wives, who played a crucial role in the post-catch processing of the fish. The herring season was a significant event in the fishing industry of the time, with Great Yarmouth being one of the most important ports for this trade in Britain. The arrival of these boats marked the beginning of a frenetic period of activity, as the community came together to ensure the efficient and effective processing of the herring catch. In the photograph, we see fishermen diligently cleaning their nets, a necessary step in the process of preparing them for the next round of fishing. The steam-powered machinery in the background is evidence of the technological advancements that were being integrated into the industry, making the process more efficient and productive. The women, dressed in their traditional attire, are seen working alongside the men, cleaning and sorting the herring. This task was almost exclusively carried out by the Scotch women, who were renowned for their expertise in this area. The herring, once cleaned and sorted, would be salted and packed in barrels for preservation and transportation to markets across the country and beyond. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the rich maritime history of Great Yarmouth and the important role it played in the herring fishery industry during the early 1900s.
