EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts three distinct species of sandpipers: the Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca), Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla), and Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius). The image is based on an ornithological illustration by the renowned naturalist John James Audubon, created for Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published in Harrisburg in 1890. The Greater Yellowlegs, as their name suggests, are characterized by their long, yellow legs, which are longer than those of other sandpipers. They are also larger in size, with a distinctive black and white plumage. The Semipalmated Sandpiper, on the other hand, is a small, slender bird with brownish-gray upperparts and a white underbelly. Their most distinguishing feature is the semi-webbed feet, which allow them to walk easily in shallow water. The Spotted Sandpiper is easily identified by the black spots on their back and wings, as well as their long, straight, yellow bill. This beautiful chromolithograph, with its intricate detail and vibrant colors, offers a glimpse into the natural history of these fascinating birds. The image captures the essence of the American landscape of the late 19th century, providing a window into a time when the natural world was still largely undiscovered and unexplored. The use of the lithographic process allowed for the creation of high-quality, detailed images, making this a valuable addition to any collection of ornithological illustrations.
