EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, entitled "Green Silver-spangled Shark, Autumnal Rustic, and Figure," is a stunning representation of several intriguing Lepidoptera species. The central figure is the Green Silver-spangled Shark moth, Cucullia argentea, with its distinctive green wings adorned with silver spots. The moth's name derives from its resemblance to the shark's body and fins. Surrounding the Green Silver-spangled Shark are various other moths, adding to the richness of this natural tableau. The Autumnal Rustic moth, Eugnorisma glareosa, is depicted in the upper left corner. Its warm, autumnal colors blend seamlessly with the surrounding foliage, making it a perfect representation of the season. In the lower right corner, we find the Figure Eighty moth, Tethea ocularis, named for its distinctive markings that resemble the number eighty. The Persicariae, Accipitrina, Labecula, and Dot moths are also present, each with unique patterns and colors. This engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and beauty of the natural world. It was created by the skilled hand of Johann Carl Bock, based on the meticulous observations of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers. Espers' work, "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur," was published in Erlangen in 1786 and marked a significant contribution to the field of entomology. The intricate process of hand-coloring these copperplate engravings added an additional layer of artistry to the already impressive work. This piece is a beautiful reminder of the delicate balance and interconnectedness of nature, showcasing the various stages of these moths' lives, from caterpillar to pupa to adult.
