EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Gumbo-limbo tree, scientifically known as Bursera simaruba, also referred to as the copperwood, chaca, turpentine tree, or twinflower tree. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," a comprehensive dictionary of natural sciences published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The Gumbo-limbo tree is native to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It is characterized by its distinctive red bark, which is believed to protect the tree from the sun and insects. The tree can grow up to 30 meters tall and produces small, white or pink flowers that form in pairs, hence the common name "twinflower." The fruit of the Gumbo-limbo tree is edible and is used in traditional medicine for various ailments. The tree also produces a resin that has been used historically for its turpentine and other medicinal properties. This beautiful illustration captures the intricate details of the Gumbo-limbo tree, from its twisted trunk to its delicate flowers, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 19th century.
