EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating representation of three distinct flatfish species: Halibut, Lined Sole, and Dover Sole, taken from the pages of Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg, Germany, in 1804. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors bring these marine creatures to life, inviting us to explore the intricacies of their anatomy and unique characteristics. At the center of the image, the Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) dominates with its impressive size and distinctive coloration. Its large, flat body is marked by a distinctive dark blotch on each side, while its eyes are located on the right side of its body. The Halibut is a highly-prized food fish, known for its tender, white flesh. To the left of the Halibut, we find the Lined Sole (Achirus lineatus), a smaller flatfish with a more subtle appearance. Its body is covered in small, dark spots and lines, providing excellent camouflage against the sandy seafloor. The Lined Sole is a common inhabitant of shallow coastal waters and is an essential food source for various marine predators. On the right side of the Halibut, the Dover Sole (Solea solea) is depicted. This flatfish has a uniform grayish-brown coloration, with a slightly paler underside. Its eyes are located on the left side of its body, allowing it to blend in with the seafloor and ambush its prey. The Dover Sole is a popular food fish in Europe and is known for its delicate, sweet flavor. Wilhelm, a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, was an influential figure in the field of ichthyology during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His encyclopedia was a groundbreaking work that showcased the natural history of fish in exquisite detail, making it an invaluable resource for scientists, artists, and collectors alike.
