[Caption] This photograph showcases the de Havilland DH.106 Comet 1XB, registration number G-APAS (msn 6022), on display at the RAF Museum Cosford, or Aerospace Museum Cosford. The Comet 1XB is the last of the initial variant of this iconic jet airliner, which was delivered to Air France in 1958 as F-BGNZ. However, it was returned to the Ministry of Supply when the Comets were grounded due to safety concerns following a series of crashes. Subsequently, the Comet 1XB was converted to 1XB standard and operated by the Royal Air Force as XM823. When retired from flying, it was allocated to No.2 School of Technical Training at RAF Cosford with the maintenance serial 8351M. In the late 1970s or early 1980s, the aircraft was transferred to the RAF Museum collection. Despite being painted with BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) livery, G-APAS never actually flew with this commercial airline. The Comet 1XB is an essential piece of aviation history, representing the early days of jet aviation and the groundbreaking innovations that led to the development of modern commercial air travel. This photograph captures the timeless elegance and sophistication of the Comet 1XB, with its sleek lines and distinctive tail fin. The image serves as a reminder of the important role that this aircraft played in the history of flight and the aeronautical industry. [End of Caption]
