EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the spirit of Helene Dutrieu (1877-1961), a trailblazing Belgian pioneer who defied gender norms and broke records in various fields, including cycling, motorcycling, automobile racing, stunt driving, and aviation. On November 25, 1910, Dutrieu made history as the fourth woman in the world and the first Belgian woman to obtain an aeroplane pilot's license. Nicknamed "Girl Hawk," she flew this biplane with her mechanic, Beaud, as a passenger in a non-stop, overland flight from Blankenberge to Bruges and back, marking the first such journey between two Belgian cities by a female pilot. Dutrieu's groundbreaking achievements in aviation came after she had already made a name for herself in other male-dominated sports. An accomplished cyclist and cycling world champion, she also excelled in motorcycling, automobile racing, and stunt driving. Her fearless spirit and determination to push boundaries inspired generations of women to pursue their dreams in sports and aviation. This photograph, taken on September 3, 1910, early in the morning, showcases Dutrieu's unwavering resolve and her passion for flying. The biplane, with its open cockpit and wings spread wide, symbolizes the freedom and exhilaration she experienced during her record-breaking flight. The image of Dutrieu, poised and focused, with her goggles and scarf, encapsulates the essence of a pioneering aviatrice who defied societal expectations and left an indelible mark on history.
