EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the legendary Greek hero Heracles, or Hercules, in the midst of his 11th labor. According to mythology, Heracles was tasked by his wife Deianira, at the behest of the goddess Hera, with obtaining the golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides. The garden was guarded by the serpent Ladon, a dragon with a hundred heads, which Heracles managed to subdue by placing Hera's magical cloak around himself, rendering him invisible. In this illustration, Heracles is shown standing tall and determined, his muscular form clad in a lion skin, holding a club in one hand and a golden apple in the other. The serpent Ladon, coiled around the tree bearing the golden apples, gazes at the hero with a wary expression. In the background, an elevated temple dedicated to Zeus, the king of the gods, can be seen on Mount Olympus. The intricate details of the temple, along with the lush greenery and the vibrant colors of the illustration, add to the mythological allure of the scene. This engraving is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1842. The meticulous attention to detail and the historical accuracy of the costumes and settings make this a valuable and fascinating representation of ancient mythology.
