EDITORS COMMENTS
Hippolyte as D'Espernon in Le Roman Comique: A Theatrical Spectacle of Elegance and Wit This handcoloured lithograph depicts Hippolyte as D'Espernon, a character from the popular 19th-century French comedy, Le Roman Comique, which premiered at the Theatre du Vaudeville in Paris in 1846. The production was a collaboration between the renowned artists Dennery, Cormon, and Romain, with the illustration by Alexandre Lacauchie published in Victor Dollet's Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris. In this scene, Hippolyte, portrayed as D'Espernon, is shown in a striking stage costume. He wears a richly textured, velvet doublet in a deep burgundy hue, adorned with gold lace and embroidery. The collar of his shirt is visible beneath the open neckline of the doublet, adding a touch of sophistication to the ensemble. A sash, also in gold, is draped around his waist, cinching his waist and accentuating his figure. The character's elegant attire is completed with a three-cornered hat, a ruff collar, and a cane. Le Roman Comique, a comedy in five acts, was written by Louis-Charles Caigniez and Alexandre Dumas père. The play is a romantic comedy that revolves around the misunderstandings and complications that arise when two couples fall in love, only to be separated by their own misconceptions and the interference of others. Hippolyte's character, D'Espernon, is a nobleman who is in love with Rosine, but is deceived by her father into believing she is in love with another man. This lithograph is a testament to the theatrical artistry and fashion sensibilities of the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the world of Parisian theater and the intricate, elaborate costumes that brought the characters to life on stage.
