HMAS Yarra - River-Class Torpedo Destroyer

Royal Australian Navy - HMAS Yarra / HMS Yarra, a River-Class Torpedo Destroyer, making way at speed, on the River Clyde during manufacturers trials in 1910. Yarra was built by William Denny & Bros. Dumbarton in 1910, to a 1909 order, for the Commonwealth Naval Forces (the predecessor of the RAN). Yarra was temporarily commissioned into the Royal Navy on completion in 1910 and handed over to Australian control on arrival in Australia. From 1914 to 1917, Yarra was involved in wartime patrols in the Pacific and South East Asian regions, before she and her sister ships were transferred to the Mediterranean Sea for anti-submarine operations. She returned to Australia in 1919 and was used primarily to train naval reservists. Decommissioned into reserve then reactivated on five occasions between 1919 and 1928, Yarra was paid off for the final time in 1928 and taken to Cockatoo Island Dockyard for stripping, before being sunk as a target ship in 1932. Date: 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, HMAS Yarra, a River-Class Torpedo Destroyer of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), is seen making its way at full speed on the River Clyde during manufacturers' trials in 1910. Built by William Denny & Bros. in Dumbarton, Scotland, for the Commonwealth Naval Forces - the precursor to the RAN - Yarra was temporarily commissioned into the Royal Navy upon completion and was later handed over to Australian control upon arrival in Australia. The River-Class Torpedo Destroyer HMAS Yarra was commissioned in 1910 and was one of six such vessels ordered by the Commonwealth Naval Forces. During the First World War, from 1914 to 1917, Yarra was involved in wartime patrols in the Pacific and South East Asian regions. In 1917, she and her sister ships were transferred to the Mediterranean Sea for anti-submarine operations. After the war, HMAS Yarra returned to Australia and was primarily used to train naval reservists. Decommissioned into reserve in 1919, she was reactivated on five occasions between 1919 and 1928 for various duties. In 1928, Yarra was paid off for the final time and taken to Cockatoo Island Dockyard for stripping. In 1932, she was sunk as a target ship. This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of the Royal Australian Navy, showcasing the HMAS Yarra in action during its manufacturers' trials on the River Clyde in 1910. The River-Class Torpedo Destroyer played a crucial role in the early years of the RAN, contributing to both wartime efforts and post-war training.
