HMS Leviathan, Drake-class armoured cruiser

Royal Navy - HMS Leviathan, a Drake-class armoured cruiser. HMS Leviathan was one of four Drake-class armoured cruisers built for the Royal Navy around 1900. She was assigned to the China Station upon completion and then served in the Mediterranean Fleet in 1905-06. She was assigned to the 7th Cruiser Squadron in 1907 before she was briefly reduced to reserve. Leviathan was recommissioned in 1909 for service with the 4th Cruiser Squadron before she was placed in reserve in 1913. Recommissioned in mid-1914, she was assigned to the 6th Cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet at the beginning of World War I. She spent most of the rest of the year searching for German commerce raiders and escorting convoys before she became flagship of the 1st Cruiser Squadron. In early 1915, she was reassigned to the 6th Cruiser Squadron before she became flagship of the North America and West Indies Station in March. Leviathan retained that position for the next three years until she was relieved as flagship in early 1918 and began escorting convoys from North America to Britain. She was placed in reserve in 1919 and sold for scrap in early 1920. Date: circa 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Leviathan: A Historical Voyage of a Drake-class Armoured Cruiser This evocative photograph captures the majestic presence of HMS Leviathan, a Drake-class armoured cruiser of the Royal Navy. Built around the turn of the 20th century, HMS Leviathan was one of four such vessels commissioned by the Royal Navy. Upon completion, she was assigned to the China Station, marking the beginning of her illustrious career in the British fleet. In the ensuing years, HMS Leviathan saw service in the Mediterranean Fleet and the 7th Cruiser Squadron. She was briefly reduced to reserve but was soon recommissioned for service with the 4th Cruiser Squadron. When war broke out in 1914, HMS Leviathan was once again called into action, joining the 6th Cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet. Throughout the First World War, HMS Leviathan played a crucial role in protecting British interests. She spent most of her time searching for German commerce raiders and escorting convoys across the Atlantic. In early 1915, she became the flagship of the 1st Cruiser Squadron before being reassigned to the 6th Cruiser Squadron later that year. In March 1915, she became the flagship of the North America and West Indies Station, a position she held for the next three years. In early 1918, HMS Leviathan was relieved as flagship and returned to escorting convoys from North America to Britain. She was placed in reserve in 1919 and sold for scrap in early 1920, marking the end of an era for this historic vessel. This photograph, taken circa 1910, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur and power of HMS Leviathan as she sailed the seas in defense of the British Empire.
