EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking copperplate engraving depicts Holy Roman Emperor Conrad I, also known as Conradus or Conrad the Younger, who ruled as King of East Francia from 1024 until his death in 1039. Born in Swabia, Conrad was the eldest son of Emperor Henry II and his second wife, Cunigunde of Luxembourg. He succeeded his father upon his death and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in 1027, making him the first German emperor to be crowned in the city since Charlemagne. Conrad's reign was marked by military campaigns against the Slavic tribes in the east and the Magyars in the south, as well as internal struggles for power. He was also known for his patronage of the arts and learning, and was a supporter of the monastic reform movement. The engraving, taken from the 17th-century work "De Roomsche Monarchy" by Abraham Bogaerts, shows Conrad in classical Caesar-like attire, wearing a laurel wreath and holding a scepter and orb. The Latin inscription at the bottom reads "CONRADUS D.G. IMP. ROM. GERM. REX," meaning "Conrad, by the grace of God, Roman Emperor, King of the Germans." The image of Conrad as a powerful and regal figure reflects the ideals of imperial rule during the Middle Ages, with the emperor as a divine ruler and protector of the realm. The use of classical motifs in the portrait also underscores the connection between the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, emphasizing the continuity of imperial power from ancient Rome to the present day.
