EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Georg Wolfgang Knorr for his Deliciae Naturae Selectae (Select Delights of Nature) publication in 1771, showcases two fascinating marine creatures: the Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) and the Lobster (Homarus gammarus). The image, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg, captures the intricacies of their forms with remarkable detail. The Horseshoe Crab, also known as the King Crab or the Strawberry Crab due to its distinctive red spots, is depicted on the left side of the print. This ancient marine arthropod, which has been around for over 450 million years, is not a true crab but rather a close relative of spiders and scorpions. Its distinctive horseshoe-shaped body serves as a protective shield, while its long, spiked tail helps it to swim in the shallow coastal waters where it lives. On the right side of the print, the Lobster (Homarus gammarus) is shown in all its glory. This popular and delicious crustacean is native to the North Atlantic and North Sea. Its colorful exoskeleton, with its distinctive orange-red hue, is a testament to its rich diet, which consists mainly of crabs, mussels, and other shellfish. The large claws of the lobster are not only used for defense and capturing prey but also for crushing the shells of its food sources. This stunning illustration not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of these two marine creatures but also serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the natural world that existed long before us. The meticulous attention to detail in the engraving process ensures that the unique features of both the Horseshoe Crab and the Lobster are captured for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
