EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a human sacrifice ritual taking place within a sacred marae, or ceremonial site, in Tahiti during the early 19th century. The marae, which served as both a religious and community center, was an essential part of Tahitian life, where various rituals and ceremonies were performed to honor the gods and ensure the wellbeing of the community. In this scene, drummers are seen at the left side of the image, their rhythmic beats providing the soundtrack for the solemn occasion. A hog-tied victim stands at the center, his fate sealed as two grave diggers prepare to bury him before a pile of human skulls and quivers of arrows. The presence of the skulls and arrows underscores the violent nature of the ritual, which was believed to appease the gods and ensure the continuity of life. Hand-colored copperplate engraving by Sasso after John Webber, this illustration is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1844. The meticulous detail and vivid colors of the engraving offer a glimpse into the rich and complex culture of the Pacific Islands, providing a window into a time long past.
