EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases two exquisite varieties of Iris: Iris florentina and Iris germanica nothovar. The illustration was meticulously created by Sydenham Edwards and beautifully engraved by F. Sansom for the renowned botanist and horticulturist, William Curtis, as part of his Lectures on Botany, delivered at the Botanic Garden in Lambeth, England, in 1805. Iris florentina, also known as the Yellow Flag Iris, is a tall, elegant perennial with long, slender rhizomes and broad, green leaves. The vibrant yellow flowers with purple veins and dark purple signals adorn the tall spikes, blooming in late spring and early summer. These irises are native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and are commonly found in wetlands and along the edges of ponds and streams. Iris germanica nothovar, on the other hand, is a popular garden plant with a rich history. This variety of Iris, also known as the German Bearded Iris, is characterized by its tall, sturdy stems, which bear large, showy flowers with distinctive beard-like markings on the falls. The flowers come in various colors, including blue, purple, pink, and white, and bloom in late spring. This iris is native to the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The intricate details of the flowers, veins, and other botanical features are expertly captured in this beautiful handcoloured copperplate engraving, providing a captivating glimpse into the world of these enchanting iris varieties. The illustration serves as a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, and remains an invaluable resource for botanical research and appreciation.
