EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Italian stone pine, Pinus pinea, also known as Pino domestico, a native evergreen tree of the Mediterranean region. The tree is shown with a faithful canine companion at its base, a common sight in the Mediterranean countryside where these pines have long been valued for their edible pine nuts, or pinoli. The tree's distinctive cones, or strobili, are visible at the tips of the branches, along with the prickly rose, Rosa canina, which grows amongst the pine's roots. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 for Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, a comprehensive dictionary of natural sciences published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the depiction of the tree's thorny leaves, the delicate rosehips, and the texture of the pine bark. This beautiful and historically significant image offers a glimpse into the natural history of the Mediterranean landscape and the botanical knowledge of the time.
