EDITORS COMMENTS
Johnny Newcome and His Middy Companions: A Raucous Moment in the Cockpit of HMS Victory This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Charles Williams' illustration in John Mitford's "Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy," published in London in 1819, captures a lively scene in the cockpit of the HMS Victory. At the center, Johnny Newcome, a middy or midshipman, is seen sharing a grog-filled mug with his shipmates. The cockpit, a multifunctional space on a Royal Navy ship, served as a birthplace, captain's store room, and steward's room, among other purposes. The walls of the cockpit are adorned with sextants, pistols, and muskets, all essential tools for navigating the seas and defending the ship. A large tub of grog sits on the floor, adding to the boisterous atmosphere. The middies, dressed in their uniforms, seem to be enjoying the moment, oblivious to the chaos that often ensued during these gatherings. The scene depicted in this engraving is reminiscent of the uproar and hooliganism that often accompanied the sale of pigs, hogs, and other goods in the market stalls near the ships. The violence and rowdiness were not limited to the sailors and middies, as evidenced by the turbaned Moor, a Jewish man, and a Spanish sailor, all involved in the melee. The Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy, published during the Napoleonic Wars, offers a glimpse into the nautical life of the Regency and Georgian eras. This engraving, with its intricate details and lively composition, transports us back to a time of colonialism and empire, when the British Navy ruled the waves.
