EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Jointed Rush, Juncus articulatus, a remarkable annual plant from the rich botanical archive of Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was meticulously engraved by Bozza under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century. Jointed Rush, also known as Juncus articulatus, is a slender herb with silvery-white rhizomes and long, jointed stems. Its small, greenish-white flowers bloom in dense spikes, and its fruit is a three-valved capsule. This plant, native to Europe, Asia, and North America, is often found in moist environments and is sometimes used as an ornamental plant. Turpin's masterful illustration captures the intricate details of the Jointed Rush, from its delicate leaves to its slender stems and tiny flowers. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the engraving. Turpin (1775-1840) was one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of his time, known for his precise and detailed illustrations. His work was widely published and admired for its accuracy and artistic merit. This engraving is a testament to his skill and dedication to botanical illustration. The Jointed Rush was also known by several other names in the 19th century, including Common Rush, Argentine Herb, and Monetaria. It was sometimes used as a medicinal plant and was believed to have healing properties, particularly for the eyes. The plant was also used as a substitute for rice in some cultures, making it an important vegetable source. This engraving is an invaluable historical record of the botanical knowledge of the 19th century and a beautiful example of the art of botanical illustration.
