EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Junsai, or Brasenia schreberi, a beautiful aquatic plant native to Central and South America. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The engraving shows the plant in its entirety, with its long, submerged stems bearing heart-shaped leaves and small, white flowers. The plant is also known as pipewort, Stanghi, or Paepalanthus dendroides, and is a member of the Araceae family. The plant's edible fruits, which are depicted in the illustration, are round and purple, and are sometimes used as a vegetable in Latin American cuisine. The intricate details of the plant's structure are beautifully rendered in the hand-colored stipple engraving, which was engraved by Devegni. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of small dots to create shading and texture, adds depth and dimension to the illustration. This illustration is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of Turpin and his team, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating aquatic plant.
