EDITORS COMMENTS
King Henry VI of England and Margaret of Anjou's wedding at Titchfield Abbey on 23 April 1445 was a grand spectacle, with the young king, aged 24, and his bride, a 15-year-old Margaret, exchanging vows in the presence of a bishop and an assemblage of courtiers. The scene is depicted in this handcoloured steel engraving after an illustration by John Leech from Gilbert Abbott A Beckett's Comic History of England, published by Bradbury, Agnew & Co. London, 1880. The image captures the essence of the Tudor era, with the bride and her maids dressed in hennins, the tall, conical headdresses popular during the period. The king, wearing a rich tunic and a crown, looks resplendent, while Margaret, adorned in a red and white gown, symbolizing the War of the Roses, which would later engulf England, holds a candle. The wedding was not without its share of drama, with the mad King Henry VI often succumbing to bouts of insanity. The stage is set for future conflicts, with the looming presence of Richard III, who would eventually seize the throne from Henry. This Victorian-era caricature, with its anachronistic touches and comical elements, adds a layer of humor to the historical event. The audience in the box, with their ornate attire and theatrical setting, complete with wings, flats, lights, and an orchestra, further underscore the theatricality of the occasion. Despite the anachronisms and caricatures, the image remains a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a visual representation of a pivotal moment in English history.
