EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by George Prideaux Robert Harris for Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children) in 1823, showcases an intriguing assembly of four iconic Australian marsupials: the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), thylacine or Tasmanian tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus), and white phalanger or cuscus (Phalangista alba). The koala, depicted in the top left corner, is a beloved symbol of Australia, recognized for its distinctive rounded ears and gripping claws. The koala's fur is grayish-brown, and it is known to spend most of its time sleeping in eucalyptus trees. This species is currently endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The Tasmanian devil, illustrated in the top right corner, is the largest living marsupial carnivore. Its distinctive facial features, including large, sharp teeth and powerful jaws, make it a formidable predator. The Tasmanian devil, once widespread across mainland Australia, is now extinct in the wild and only found on the island of Tasmania. The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, is shown in the bottom left corner. This marsupial was known for its distinctive stripes and powerful build. The thylacine was hunted to extinction due to competition with European settlers' livestock and habitat loss. The white phalanger or cuscus, in the bottom right corner, is a tree-climbing marsupial with white fur and a prehensile tail. It is native to New Guinea and northern Australia and is an important food source for many indigenous communities. This engraving not only showcases the unique beauty of these marsupials but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species like the koala and the Tasmanian devil.
