EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts the Lesser Bougainvillea, also known as the Paperflower or Bougainvillea glabra. The image is based on an illustration by Lena Lowis, created during her time in India in the late 19th century. Lena Lowis, formerly Selena Caroline Shakespear, was a British woman artist who accompanied her husband, Lt.-Col. Ninian Lowis, to India. She is known for her detailed and accurate botanical illustrations, which were published in her book "Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates" by L. Reeve in London in 1878. The Lesser Bougainvillea is a small, shrubby plant native to South America, but it has become naturalized in many parts of the world, including India. The plant is characterized by its papery bracts, which are often mistaken for flowers, but are actually modified leaves. The true flowers are small and white or pink, and appear in clusters at the ends of the branches. This handcoloured lithograph by D. Blair captures the delicate beauty of the Lesser Bougainvillea's bracts in vivid detail. The intricate veining and delicate shading are expertly rendered, bringing the image to life. The muted colours of the background add to the overall effect, creating a sense of depth and texture. Lena Lowis's illustrations were highly regarded for their accuracy and artistic merit, and this lithograph is no exception. It is a testament to her skill as an artist and her passion for botanical exploration. Today, the Lesser Bougainvillea remains a popular ornamental plant, and this beautiful image serves as a reminder of its enduring charm.
