EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Lesser Bulrush, Typha angustifolia, from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), and engraved by Stanghi. Typha angustifolia, also known as the Narrow-leaved Bulrush, is a perennial herb commonly found in wetlands and along the edges of ponds and streams. The plant is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and its slender, tubular spikes of brown or golden flowers are a distinctive feature. The engraving also includes several other plants and trees in the background, including a Lime Tree (Tilia alba) and a Linden Tree (Tilia devegni). The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves using a sharp point or needle to create tiny dots on a copper plate, adds depth and texture to the illustration, making the details of the plants stand out. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his precise and detailed drawings of plants. His work was published in various botanical works, including the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, which was a comprehensive and influential work in the field of botany during that time. The Lesser Bulrush is not only an important plant in wetland ecosystems but also has edible fruits that can be used as a vegetable or cooked as a starch. The history of this plant and its uses have been an essential part of botany and natural sciences for centuries.
