EDITORS COMMENTS
"Go then, my little Book, be out in the world! Be a comforter and a companion, a friend at hand to cheer and quiet, to distract and delight, to teach and to learn, to waken up the dull and weary, to make the sad heart glad, and the merry heart merrier. Be a friend to all, a sister to the thoughtful, a companion to the lonely, a solace in sorrow, a joy in happiness, a counsellor in perplexity, a light in darkness, a balm in affliction, a stimulus in sloth, a relief in pain, a solace in sickness, a comfort in old age, a hope in despair, a joy in the light, a cheer in the gloom, a friend in need, a guide in doubt, a light in the way, a star in the night. Go then, little Book, and may the world be kind to you, and may you be a blessing to the world!" This evocative quote from the preface of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel "Little Women" is accompanied in the 1880 first edition by this beautiful and symbolic illustration. The image, created by American artist Frank Thayer Merrill under the supervision of Louisa May Alcott herself, depicts a young woman sitting at a window, holding a book and surrounded by birds. The birds, both inside and outside the window, represent the characters and readers of the novel, drawn to the story and finding comfort and companionship within its pages. The window symbolizes the barrier between the real world and the world of the imagination, and the young woman, with her open book, is a writer or author sharing her stories with the world. This illustration, with its themes of friendship, companionship, and the power of storytelling, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Alcott's beloved novel and the 19th century social scene.
