The image, created by American artist Frank Thayer Merrill under the supervision of Louisa May Alcott herself, depicts a young woman sitting at a window, holding a book and surrounded by birds. The birds, both inside and outside the window, represent the characters and readers of the novel, drawn to the story and finding comfort and companionship within its pages.
