EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, dating back to 1885, showcases a collection of locomotives that once graced the rails of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the North Eastern Railway in England between 1848 and 1885. Each engine is illustrated in meticulous detail, providing valuable insights into the engineering marvels of the time. The first locomotive depicted is the "Theodore," built by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1842. With a length of 21 feet 6 inches and a weight of 22 tons, this early steam engine boasted a powerful 1,040 pounds of boiler pressure. Next is the "West," an engine built by Sharp, Stewart and Company in 1855. Measuring 24 feet 6 inches in length and weighing 27 tons, this locomotive featured a larger boiler capacity and improved steam efficiency. The third engine, the "Evolution," was built by the North Eastern Railway Company in 1863. With a length of 30 feet 6 inches and a weight of 41 tons, this engine represented a significant leap forward in locomotive design, boasting a more powerful boiler and larger cylinders. The photograph also includes captivating scenes from the railway, such as the iconic Beelah Viaduct, which stands tall at 120 feet high. The intricate details of the locomotives and the breathtaking landscapes come together to transport us back in time, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history of the railways in England during the late 19th century.
