EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts a Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Caretta caretta, a vulnerable marine species. The intricate detail of the engraving showcases the Loggerhead's distinctive features, including its large, powerful front flippers and heavy, domed carapace. The turtle's bones and skeletal structure are also delicately rendered, offering a glimpse into the anatomy of this magnificent creature. Originally illustrated from nature by Christian Leinberger, this engraving is taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, or Select Rarities of Nature, published in Nuremberg in 1771. The work was part of a larger collection of naturalia, or natural curiosities, owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew. Loggerhead Sea Turtles are found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, and are characterized by their large, heavy heads, which give them their common name. They are an important keystone species in their ecosystems, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health of seagrass beds and coral reefs. However, they are currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to threats such as bycatch in fisheries, habitat destruction, and climate change. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to enjoy. It is a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the past, and a reminder of the ongoing efforts to understand and protect the natural world.
