EDITORS COMMENTS
Madam Gorgon, Acicarpha tribuloides, is a striking botanical specimen depicted in this beautiful hand-coloured copperplate stipple engraving from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. The plant is named after its prickly appearance, resembling the gorgon's head from Greek mythology. The Madam Gorgon is an Old World sycamore, related to the Platanus orientalis, and is often mistaken for a silver fir, Abies, or a pine, Picea. In the background of the illustration, various other plants are depicted, including the foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, and the prickly pear, Opuntia. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate engraving, which captures the textures and forms of the plant's leaves and thorns. The illustration also includes several other botanical specimens, such as the thistle, Silybum marianum, the Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, the shooting star, Dodecatheon incadia, the melon, Cactus melocactus, and various other species. The Madam Gorgon is not an edible vegetable or fruit, but its unique appearance and intriguing name have made it a subject of interest in the history of botany and botanical illustration. This beautiful illustration is a testament to Turpin's skill and dedication to capturing the natural world in all its complexity and beauty.
