EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 13th century print depicts the coronation of Margaret, Maid of Norway, as the Queen of Scotland. Margaret, born in Norway in 1283, was the daughter of King Eric II of Norway and was chosen as the bride and future Queen of Scotland by King John Balliol in 1290. The young girl's journey to Scotland was marked by political turmoil and instability, as Scotland was under English control at the time, and Edward I of England had a claim to the Scottish throne. Despite the challenges, Margaret was crowned on the Stone of Scone, a sacred and historic stone used in the coronation of Scottish monarchs since the 9th century. The Stone of Scone was later incorporated into the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey, England, on the instructions of Edward I. The print captures the grandeur and solemnity of the coronation ceremony, with Margaret seated on the Stone of Scone, wearing a magnificent crown and robes, surrounded by Scottish nobles and clergy. The intricate details of the illustration, from the ornate decorations on the crown to the intricate patterns on the robes, offer a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of medieval royal ceremonies. Margaret's reign was brief, as she died in Scotland in 1290, possibly from illness or from the harsh Scottish winter. Her death marked the end of the Norwegian line of Scottish monarchs, and Scotland was once again under English rule until the reign of Robert the Bruce in 1306. This print is a testament to the rich history and complex political dynamics of medieval Scotland and Norway, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these ancient monarchs and their coronation ceremonies.
