EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1930s, we find Margaret Whigham and Charles Sweeny, an enchanting couple whose engagement party at The Embassy Club in December 1932 marked the beginning of a society whirlwind romance. The image, taken during an elegant soiree, captures the young, radiant bride-to-be, Margaret, beaming with joy as she stands beside her dashing fiancé, Charles. The couple's engagement was a significant event, as their subsequent wedding at the Brompton Oratory in February 1933 attracted thousands of spectators and even halted traffic. The bride wore a stunning gown designed by the renowned British designer, Norman Hartnell. Margaret and Charles quickly became the golden couple of society, with Margaret, later known as Mrs. Charles Sweeny, even earning a mention in Cole Porter's iconic song "You're the Top." However, Margaret's life took an unexpected turn when she married the 8th Duke of Argyll in 1939. Their marriage ended in a scandalous divorce, leaving behind a trail of intrigue and controversy. This photograph, a glimpse into the past, offers a tantalizing peek into the glamour and intrigue of the 1930s society scene.
