EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the coat of arms of Margrave Albrecht the Bearded of Meissen and Margrave of Misnie, as it appeared in the 15th century. The Margrave's arms are a combination of the House of Wettin, to which the Margraves of Meissen and Misnie belonged, and the Landgraves of Thuringia. The central shield displays the Wettin arms, a black eagle on a gold background, with the Thuringian arms, a red cross on a silver background, superimposed in the upper left quadrant. The crest above the shield is a gold coronet adorned with pearls and precious stones, surmounted by a black eagle holding a golden scepter in its talons. The Margrave's motto, "Fortiter et Recte," meaning "Bravely and Rightly," is inscribed below the shield. This beautiful and intricately detailed image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, published in Paris in 1890. The armorial was based on illustrations from various manuscripts, including the illustrated manuscript 4790 housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal.
