EDITORS COMMENTS

Marie Adelaide de Savoie, Duchess of Burgundy (1683-1712), is depicted in this elegant handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Georges Jacques Gatine after an illustration by Louis Marie Lante for the "Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres" publication in Paris, 1827. The Duchess is shown wearing the height of 18th-century fashion, with an elaborate Fontanges headdress adorned with lace and ribbons, a striped mantua with a voluminous train, lace sleeves, and a petticoat with gold bands and intricate embroidery. The Fontanges headdress, named after the Marquise de Fontanges who popularized it at the French court, was a tall, towering headdress that required a significant amount of hair to be piled high and held in place with wire and lace. The Duchess's mantua, or gown, is made of heavy silk, with a fitted bodice and a full, flowing skirt. The train, or the long trailing section of the gown, adds to the grandeur of the ensemble. The Duchess's petticoat, or the undergarment worn beneath the gown, is also decorated with gold bands and intricate embroidery, adding to the overall opulence of the outfit. Marie Adelaide de Savoie was the daughter of Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy, and Anne of Austria, and was married to Leopold, Duke of Lorraine and Bar in 1701. She was known for her beauty and her patronage of the arts, and this engraving captures her in all her regal splendor.
