EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, titled 'Archery Practice in the Middle Ages,' showcases three intriguing scenes of archery from the 14th and 16th centuries. In the top image, we witness a group of archers engaged in intensive practice with their longbows. Their focused expressions and determined postures convey the importance of mastering this essential skill for warfare and hunting during the medieval period. Moving on to the middle scene, we observe a crossbow shooting lesson at a school. The teacher, dressed in academic robes, instructs his students, who are attentively aiming at the butts, or targets, while their peers look on. Crossbows, with their mechanical advantage, were popular alternatives to longbows, especially among the nobility and in siege warfare. Lastly, the bottom image depicts archers honing their skills with crossbows. The archers' concentration and the presence of multiple targets suggest a competitive atmosphere. The butts, made of wooden logs or earth mounds, were essential for archery practice, providing a stable and consistent target for archers to aim at. Joseph Strutt's 'Sports and Pastimes of the People of England,' published in 1876, is an extensive and illuminating record of various games and sports throughout English history. This archery series is a testament to the rich heritage and cultural significance of this ancient sport in medieval England.
