EDITORS COMMENTS
Medieval Games: A Colorful and Playful Depiction of Pastime and Merriment from Joseph Strutt's 'Sports and Pastimes of the People of England' This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt showcases a delightful scene of medieval games, offering a glimpse into the lively and joyful pastimes of the people during this era. The image is filled with three distinct games, each with its unique charm and excitement. In the top left corner, we find a boy eagerly diving for apples on a bench, while another boy, with a mischievous grin, threatens to upend the bench, dunking the diving boy in the tub below. This simple yet entertaining game, known as 'Diving for Apples,' required agility, quick reflexes, and a good sense of humor, as the players took turns trying to grab apples while avoiding getting soaked. Moving to the middle of the image, a man guides a blindfolded companion, holding a club, towards a cauldron. The blindfolded man takes a swing, attempting to strike the cauldron, while the man offers gentle instructions and encouragement. This game, called 'Blindfolded Cauldron Strike,' required trust, communication, and precision, as the blindfolded player relied on the guidance of their partner to successfully hit the target. Finally, in the bottom right corner, we see the King of the Bean, a zany and playful royal procession. Led by a jester or 'zany,' this fake royal parade brought laughter and merriment to the people, as the 'king' was often playfully dethroned and replaced by another participant, ensuring a continuous flow of amusement throughout the event. Joseph Strutt's 'Sports and Pastimes of the People of England,' published in 1876 by Chatto and Windus, London, offers a fascinating and vibrant collection of images that capture the essence of medieval games and the joy they brought to the people during this time.
