EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Mock Strawberry, or Potentilla indica, a beautiful and intriguing plant that bears edible fruits reminiscent of strawberries, but is not related to the true strawberry. The engraving is from Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, brought exceptional skill and detail to his work. The Mock Strawberry, also known as Ipomaea purpurea, Ipomea indica, Potatoria porporina, or Morning Glory Cellai, is a vine that produces showy, purple flowers and attractive, red-streaked, edible fruits. The plant is native to Central and South America, but is now cultivated and naturalized in many parts of the world. The Mock Strawberry was valued by the Aztecs and other indigenous peoples for its medicinal properties and nutritious fruits. This exquisite engraving captures the delicate beauty of the Mock Strawberry, with its intricately detailed leaves, stems, and fruits. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and richness to the image, making it a true work of art. The engraving is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the artists and scientists involved in its creation, and remains an important historical record of this fascinating plant.
