EDITORS COMMENTS
This Monumental Brass Rubbing depicts John and Maud Pecock, a devoted couple from the 14th century, commemorated in the hallowed grounds of St Michael's Church in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Dating back to approximately 1380, this exquisite brass rubbing showcases the intricate details of the couple's effigies, which have miraculously survived the passage of time. John, depicted as a bearded man wearing a long tunic and a hood, is shown resting on his left elbow, his right hand cradling a rosary. His coat of arms, featuring three peacocks, is displayed prominently beneath him. Maud, a graceful woman with long flowing hair, is depicted seated beside her husband, her hands folded in prayer. Her coat of arms, also featuring peacocks, is displayed below her. The inscription on the brass, written in Latin, reads "JOHANES DE PECOC ET MAUD UXOR SUA," translating to "John of Pecock and Maud, his wife." This poignant memorial serves as a testament to the deep bond between the couple, who were likely married in the late 1320s or early 1330s. The intricate details of their effigies and coats of arms provide valuable insights into the fashion, craftsmanship, and artistic sensibilities of the medieval period. St Michael's Church, a historic and architecturally significant site, has been a place of worship and pilgrimage for over a thousand years. The church's collection of monumental brasses, including this one, is a unique and precious reminder of the lives and stories of those who lived in St Albans during the Middle Ages.
