In this delightfully humorous illustration by H.H. Harris, we find ourselves in the midst of a theatrical scene that has left smart society in a state of shock and consternation. Impresario C.B. Cochran, known for his extravagant productions and introductions of young and beautiful chorus girls, has surprised everyone by presenting an entirely different line-up. Instead of the usual young and vibrant ladies, Cochran introduces a chorus line of geriatric women, high-kicking their way across the stage with an infectious energy that leaves the audience in awe. Among the stunned spectators are some of the most famous and celebrated faces of the day. To the far left, we see the Aga Khan, dressed in his traditional attire, looking on in disbelief. Next to him, Lady Asquith, dressed in an elegant gown, covers her mouth in shock, her son Anthony peering over her shoulder with a mixture of amusement and embarrassment. Woolf Barnato, the wealthy diamond magnate, leans forward in his seat, a quizzical expression on his face. Sir John and Lady Lavery, both dressed in formal attire, exchange puzzled glances. Gordon Selfridge, the flamboyant retail magnate, clutches his pearl-handled cane, his eyes wide with astonishment. And in the front row, Somerset Maugham, the renowned author, scribbles furiously in his notebook, no doubt already envisioning the material for his next novel. This amusing and unexpected scene is a testament to Cochran's ability to shock and entertain, even in the most unconventional of ways.
