EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate print showcases a fascinating assemblage of Mushroom Coral species, drawn and engraved by the renowned naturalist Georg Wolfgang Knorr for his Deliciae Naturae Selectae of Kabinet van Zeldzaamheden der Natuur, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg, 1771. The intricately detailed illustration features four distinct species of Mushroom Corals: Amaranthus saxeus (1), Meandrina meandrites (2), Eschara retiformis (3), and Fungia fungites (4). Mushroom Corals, also known as Fungidia or Brain Corals, are characterized by their distinctive, cap-like structures. The Amaranthus saxeus (1), also known as the Red Brain Coral, boasts a vibrant red colour and intricate branching pattern. The Meandrina meandrites (2), or Meandering Brain Coral, displays a wavy, meandering growth pattern, earning its name. The Eschara retiformis (3), or Reticulate Brain Coral, is characterized by its net-like growth pattern, while the Fungia fungites (4), or Fungia Brain Coral, showcases a more uniform, rounded appearance. These magnificent corals were once prized possessions in Wunderkammern, or Cabinets of Curiosities, which were precursors to modern natural history museums. The Cabinet of Curiosities was a collection of unusual and exotic objects, including natural specimens, that were displayed for their educational and entertainment value. The intricate and detailed illustrations, such as this one by Knorr, were essential in documenting and cataloguing these rare and fascinating finds. This beautiful and historically significant print serves as a testament to the natural world's beauty and the importance of documenting and preserving its wonders for future generations.
