EDITORS COMMENTS
The New Custom House on the River Thames, London, as depicted in this stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving from Rudolph Ackermann's Repository of Arts, published in 1816. The New Custom House, designed by architect David Laing, is a grandiose edifice built in Portland stone with an Ionic superstructure supported to a basement and finished with an attic. This architectural masterpiece stands proudly on the south bank of the River Thames, serving as a symbol of London's commercial prowess during the Regency era. In the foreground of the image, we see a bustling scene on the river, with various boats and ships anchored or passing by. The New Custom House is the focal point of the image, its imposing presence reflected in the calm waters of the Thames. The building's intricate details are beautifully captured in the engraving, from the delicate carvings on the Ionic columns to the ornate windows and balconies. The New Custom House was built to replace the old Custom House, which had become inadequate for the growing trade and commerce in London. The new building was designed to accommodate the increasing number of customs officials and to facilitate the efficient processing of goods entering and leaving the city. The engraving also features several noteworthy figures of the time, including Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, Prince Christian Frederick of Denmark, and Prince George, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. They are all depicted in military uniform, likely attending a function or inspection at the Custom House. This exquisite copperplate engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into London's commercial and social history during the Regency era, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the time.
