EDITORS COMMENTS
Ninon de Lenclos, also known as Ninon de Lanclos, was a renowned French author, courtesan, and patron of the arts during the 17th century. Born Anne de Lenclos in 1620, she was a celebrated figure in Parisian society for her wit, intelligence, and unconventional lifestyle. This portrait captures Ninon in her prime, with her piercing gaze and an enigmatic smile playing upon her lips. The oval shape of the image accentuates her delicate features and the low neckline of her gown, revealing a hint of the seductive allure that drew so many to her. Ninon was a freethinker, known for her unconventional views on love, relationships, and morality. She was a prolific writer, penning numerous letters and essays that were published posthumously. Her works, which explored themes of love, desire, and the human condition, were widely read and admired. Despite her reputation as a courtesan, Ninon was also a generous patron of the arts. She supported many writers, artists, and musicians, including Jean Racine and Molière. Her salon was a gathering place for the intellectual elite of Paris, where ideas were exchanged and creativity flourished. Ninon de Lenclos died in 1705, leaving behind a legacy as a groundbreaking figure in French literature and culture. Her influence can still be felt today, as her works continue to inspire and intrigue readers. This portrait serves as a reminder of her enduring impact on French history and the power of the written word.
