EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created in 1890 by Mary Evans Picture Library from an original ornithological illustration by John James Audubon, showcases a stunning assemblage of five distinct North American bird species: the Northern Shrike (Lanius borealis, bird 1), Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteria virens, bird 2), Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus, bird 3), Gray-cheeked Thrush (Catharus minimus, bird 4), and three different warblers: the Blue-winged Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens, not depicted), Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens, bird 5), and American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis, not depicted as a warbler but included as bird 6, with the incorrect scientific name Americana). The Northern Shrike, also known as the butcher bird, is a large, predatory songbird with distinctive black mask and white eyestripe. The Yellow-breasted Chat, with its vibrant yellow underparts and distinctive crest, is a warbler-like bird with a unique, melodic song. The Loggerhead Shrike is another predatory bird, easily recognized by its hooked beak and distinctive black mask. The Gray-cheeked Thrush is a small, brown-and-gray bird with a distinctive gray patch on its cheeks. This beautiful and intricately detailed print, taken from Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, offers a glimpse into the rich avian diversity of the United States during the late 19th century. The use of chromolithography, a printing technique that allowed for the production of detailed, multicolored images, further enhances the visual appeal of this remarkable work.
