EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured aquatint engraving captures the grandeur of Queen Victoria's coronation parade in 1838, as evidenced by the resplendent uniforms and regal bearing of the officers of the Yeoman of the Guard. The Clerk of the Cheque, or Senior Exchequer Officer, is depicted in the center, wearing a red robe and ermine-trimmed hat. To his right stands the Ensign, identified by the Union Jack on his hat and the sword in his hand. To his left is the Lieutenant, recognizable by the sash and baton. The Yeoman of the Guard, an elite corps of bodyguards responsible for protecting the monarch, were an integral part of the coronation procession. In the background, various dignitaries and diplomats from foreign courts, including Baron Rehausen of Sweden, can be seen observing the spectacle from the safety of their carriages. The panoramic view of the procession, published by Fores, Sporting and Fine Print Repository in Piccadilly, London, offers a glimpse into the pomp and ceremony of the occasion. The coronation of Queen Victoria, held on June 28th, 1838, marked the beginning of her 63-year reign, during which she presided over a period of significant change and growth in the British Empire.
