EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Pale Tussock Moth, Calliteara pudibunda, also known as Phalaena pudibunda or Handasa pudibunda. The image was created by the skilled hand of Johann Carl Bock in 1786 for Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper's seminal work, "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur" or "The Butterflies and Moths in Representations according to Nature." The Pale Tussock Moth is a striking Lepidopteran with a wingspan of up to 5 centimeters. The moth's wings are a beautiful blend of pale brown and darker shades, with intricate patterns that resemble the texture of tree bark. The body of the moth is covered in long, silky hairs, giving it a tussock-like appearance. The life cycle of the Pale Tussock Moth is fascinating. The moth begins its life as an egg, which hatches into a caterpillar or larva. The caterpillar feeds on the leaves of various trees, such as oak and elm, and undergoes several molts before entering the pupa stage. During pupation, the caterpillar transforms into a chrysalis, and eventually emerges as an adult moth. The Pale Tussock Moth is not to be confused with other similar-looking moths, such as the Dark Tussock Moth, Calliteara fascelina, or the Bombyx mori, the common silkworm. The intricate details captured in this engraving provide a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating Lepidopteran, and serve as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
