EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate engraving is a captivating representation of four different species of lamprey eels, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804. The image showcases the Parasitic Lamprey Eel, scientifically known as Petromyzon marinus, with its distinctive elongated, eel-like body and large, sucking mouth, which it uses to attach itself to the gills of larger fish for feeding. Surrounding the Parasitic Lamprey are three other species of lampreys: the River Lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis (top left), the Brook Lamprey, Lampetra planeri (bottom left), and the Lamprey with Branchial Mouth, Lampetra branchialis (bottom right). The River and Brook Lampreys can be distinguished by their smaller size and the presence of a more conventional, gill-like mouth. The Lamprey with Branchial Mouth, also known as the Sheath Lamprey, is unique for its elongated, tubular mouth, which is covered by a sheath when not in use. Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811) was a Bavarian clergyman and naturalist, who gained recognition as the German counterpart to Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. His encyclopedia, which covered various aspects of natural history, was highly regarded for its meticulous detail and accurate illustrations. This particular engraving, with its vibrant colors and intricate lines, serves as a testament to Wilhelm's dedication to documenting the natural world.
