EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Miss Coignet after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases three fascinating species of European freshwater and marine fish: Perch (Perca fluviatilis), Shi Drum (Umbrina cirrosa), and Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The Perch, also known as the European Perch or the Ruffe, is a popular game fish with a vibrant green and gold coloration. The Shi Drum, or Diacanthus, is a small, brownish-gray fish with a distinctive black spot on its side. The Seabass, or Bar, is a large, powerful fish with a silver-gray body and distinctive black stripes. This engraving is taken from the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, a comprehensive work by the renowned French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède, published in Paris in 1825 by Eymery. The intricately detailed illustration captures the unique characteristics of each fish, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the engraving, making it a stunning addition to any collection of historical natural history prints.
