This evocative photograph captures the exterior of the Criterion PH, located in Southend-on-Sea, Essex (SS1 2EJ), as it appeared prior to its renaming to Papillon in July 2018. The image showcases the pub's colorful facade, with its distinctive signage and ornate architectural details, which have been beautifully preserved despite the severe fire damage it endured in June 1975. Originally owned by the Charrington and Company Limited, the Criterion was a beloved local watering hole that drew patrons with its warm and inviting atmosphere. Following the unfortunate fire incident, the pub was redesigned and altered to restore its former glory. However, the new name, Papillon, signaled a fresh start for this cherished establishment. The Criterion PH, now known as Papillon, continues to be a popular gathering place for residents and visitors alike, offering a welcoming environment where friends can meet, stories can be shared, and memories can be made.
