EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Guildford Arms pub in Poplar, London, as it looked in the 1950s. The image, taken in 1958, shows the corner view of this historic public house, with its distinctive red brick façade and ornate signage. At the time, the Guildford Arms was a Free House operated by the Charrington and Company Limited. The back of the print reveals intriguing details about the pub's history. According to the trading record, the Guildford Arms had been in operation since at least 1938, and by 1961, it was still under the management of Charrington and Company. The pub, located at 146-148 East India Dock Road, E14 6AF, was a popular gathering place for the local community. Unfortunately, the Guildford Arms did not survive the passage of time. By July 2018, the pub had been demolished, and in its place stood modern flats. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, when the pub was a beloved institution in the heart of Poplar. The 1950s were a significant decade in British history, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the social and architectural landscape of the time. The image invites us to imagine the stories and memories that were created within the walls of the Guildford Arms, and to reflect on the changing nature of urban development and community spaces.
