EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the exterior of the Yorkshire Grey Public House, located in Bethnal Green, London, in the 1950s. The image presents a corner view of the pub, with its distinctive red brick facade, adorned with ornate white detailing and the iconic "Yorkshire Grey" sign. The pub, which was a popular watering hole for locals and travelers alike, was owned and operated by the Charrington and Company Limited. The Yorkshire Grey, which dates back to 1951, stood proudly in the heart of Bethnal Green, a vibrant and diverse community in the East End of London. The pub's historic charm and welcoming atmosphere drew in patrons from all walks of life, who gathered there to share stories, enjoy a pint, and connect with one another. Unfortunately, the Yorkshire Grey, like many historic buildings in the area, did not survive the test of time. The pub was demolished in 2014, marking the end of an era for the community. Today, the site where the pub once stood is a reminder of the rich history and character of Bethnal Green and the important role that local pubs play in shaping the fabric of our communities. This photograph, taken in the 1950s, offers a glimpse into a bygone era and serves as a tribute to the Yorkshire Grey Public House and the memories it holds for generations of Londoners.
